BC7501 INTRODUCTION TO BIBLICAL COUNSELING
An introduction to the theory and practice of biblical counseling.
The biblical theological framework, the multidimensional model, and
methods of dealing with common problems are some topics to be developed.
Lecture, video, and case studies form the bulk of the classroom material.

BC7502 COUNSELING IN THE LOCAL CHURCH I
A biblical approach to equip lay counselors as ambassadors of Christ,
to help Christians work through daily living problems with counsel,
prayer, evangelism and discipleship. REQUIRED FOR M.A.B.C., M.A.M.B.C.,
C.B.C. and strongly encouraged for M.DIV. - Two Credit Hours
BC7505 ADVANCED BIBLICAL COUNSELING
Designed to help the student develop a particular knowledge base of
the ten most common problems encountered in a ministry setting and
the functional skills for interviewing, developing a counseling strategy
and maintaining a relationship with the counselee. PREREQUISITE BC7501.

BC7509 COUNSELING THEORY
The work of theorists in the major schools of psychology will be discussed
and evaluated from a biblical perspective. The theories of personality
formation will be contrasted with the biblical data. PREREQUISITE

BC7606 USING THE BIBLE IN COUNSELING
Designed to equip counselors to accurately and effectively use Scripture
in a consistent and biblical way. The objective is the incorporation
of the full counsel of God, avoiding proof-texting and easy answers,
while bringing to bear the rubrics of reformational theology on daily
living. PREREQUISITE BC7501. REQUIRED FOR M.A.B.C., C.B.C. – Two

BC7617 BIBLICAL COUNSELING AND THE LAW
Critical issues regarding the biblical counselor and the law in such
issues as child abuse, mate abuse, church discipline and biomedical
ethics. Issues pertinent to the establishment and management of a
Biblical Counseling center or ministry are discussed. Students will
examine the laws of their own state. PREREQUISITE BC7501 OR BC7502.

BC7622 A BIBLICAL APPROACH TO ADDICTIONS
Alcohol, gambling, sexuality and spending have all become part of the
addiction scene in America and in the American church. A biblical
understanding of the dynamics of addiction and special attention
to a biblical approach to helping those addicted will form the core
of this course. The course will include lectures, guest lectures,
films and role-plays. PREREQUISITE: BC7501.

BC7623 UNDERSTANDING AND EVALUATING PROFESSIONAL LITERATURE
An introduction to professional literature providing the student with
an understanding of the basic statistical structure, the types of
research models used, and the meaning of the findings reported in
journal articles. The relationship between scientific psychology
and biblical counseling will be explored. Students who have had social
statistics in undergraduate school will be exempt from this course.

BC7624 READINGS IN BIBLICAL COUNSELING
This is a tutorial course. Students will meet with the professor to
determine at least five books (not previously read) to read for this
course along with appropriate journal articles. After completing
the reading, the student will submit a 12-15-page paper summarizing
the salient points gleaned from this experience. REQUIRED FOR M.A.B.C. - Two Credit Hours
BC7630 MARRIAGE AND FAMILY COUNSELING
An introduction to the biblical approach to counseling couples and
families. Biblical concepts and relational dynamics that pertain
to marriage and family living will be discussed. The work of major
therapists in the field will be investigated and critiqued. PREREQUISITE
BC7501 or BC7502. REQUIRED FOR M.DIV., M.A.B.C., M.A.M.BC., C.B.C. - Two Credit Hours
BC7631 PREMARITAL COUNSELING
Provides the student with the occasion to employ basic biblical, theological
and personality knowledge in assisting couples in the preparation
for marriage. A biblical model for conducting premarital counseling
will be explored and students encouraged to develop modifications
applicable to specific couples. REQUIRED FOR M.DIV. - Two Credit Hours
BC7632 ADVANCED MARRIAGE AND FAMILY COUNSELING
Application of Biblical principles to marriage and family issues in
the context of church life. Development of methods and techniques
through case studies and role playing will be taught. Various instruments,
surveys, and a variety of homework assignments and projects will
be used. Classes will consist of lectures, reports, role playing
and interaction with reading assignments. REQUIRED FOR M.A.BC., M.A.M.BC. - Two Credit

BC7735 GROUP DYNAMICS
The biblical basis for group work and human interpersonal dynamics
will be discussed. Group structure, control and mutual respect will
form the biblical framework. Contemporary literature, experiential
learning, and the dangerous abuses of group work will be considered
in biblical perspective. PREREQUISITE BC7501 or BC7502. REQUIRED

BC7755 COUNSELING IN THE LOCAL CHUIRCH II
This course will include the discussion of daily living problems, biblical
references for godly solutions, role play of counseling situations,
observations of actual counseling situations and supervised counseling
practice. PREREQUISITE BC7502. REQUIRED FOR M.A.B.C., C.B.C., M.A.M.BC. – Two

BC7775 COUNSELING CASE STUDIES
This course will offer the student the opportunity to explore a counseling
issue of interest in depth under the faculty supervision.

BC7800 COUNSELING INTERNSHIP REQUIRED FOR M.A.B.C.
This internship is completed at the end of the BC program under the
supervision and direction of the degree program chairman. – 6
credit hours

BC7611 BIBLICAL COUNSELING SEMINAR
During the student’s tenure at BTS, he will register for three
counseling seminars sponsored by the seminary or approved by the seminary
and prepare a paper summarizing that seminar. In addition, the student
will read twenty-five journal articles from an approved list and write
a summary/critique paper on each article. PREREQUISITE BC7501 or BC7502.

BC7626 EXPERIENCING BIBLICAL COUNSELING SEMINAR
This is a practicum seminar which will be conducted off-campus and
which will involve people from other institutions and counseling
practices. The seminar will consist of casework conducted by group
dynamics, role-play, lecture and demonstration cases. The seminar
will include a variety of instructors. The student must elect to
pay the registration for the seminar and arrangements will be made
to apply for credit after the prescribed academic component has been

BC7628 LAY COUNSELOR TRAINING
Presents a helping model and a helper skills training program designed
to implement a lay counseling program in the local church. The student
is presented with both a learning theory and a practical model. -

BC7629 BIBLICAL PARENTING
The covenant concept of parenting is explored. Structuring parenting
to move the child from dependency upon parents to dependency upon
God with responsibility to govern one’s life within the framework
of biblical ethics is developed. Various dimensions of demonstrating
love, discipline with consistency and sibling relationships is considered.
The course will include lecture, role play, film and class discussion.

BC7668 CRISIS COUNSELING
Designed to equip the student with the skills to handle intense situations.
Emphasis will be given to developing a paradigm for crisis intervention.
The student will develop a plan for transitioning from crisis intervention
to life style management. Understanding the church’s role and
accessing Christian resources will be essential elements. - Two Credit

BC7669 YOUTH COUNSELING
This course will focus on giving the student the skills to understand
and communicate effectively with youth, to understand the biblical
data essential to enabling youth to mature, and to understand the unique
pressures and problems of today’s youth culture.) - Two Credit

BC7750 COMTEMPORARY ISSUES IN BIBLICAL COUNSELING
Journal readings, bibliography of readings, lectures and a counseling
practicum project will be included. Seminar meetings will be negotiated
at first class meeting. PREREQUISITE: Twelve hours of counseling

BC7901-05 INDEPENDENT COUNSELING RESEARCH – DIRECTED
STUDY
Independent Counseling Research is intended to give the student an
opportunity to pursue a subject of interest under the oversight of
a faculty mentor. The student must submit a proposal for the study
to the President or Vice President of Academic Affairs. The President
or the Vice President of Academic Affairs will approve the proposal
and determine the appropriate faculty member to be assigned as the
mentor. – One to Five Credit Hours
